Fort Dufferin Historical Site

Located 2 miles North of Emerson on the River Road West.

It was from here in 1874 that 300 members of the Northwest Mounted Police began an 840 mile trek to the Rocky Mountains. In 1877 Fort Dufferin was established as a base for the International Joint Commission who established and marked the Canada/U.S. boundary. Over the years it was used as an immigration depot for settlers, notably Mennonites going to the western reserve.
